Watson-North Funeral Home is honored to be of service and ministry to the family of Mr. Jerry Laurence Yates age 80 of Winchester. Mr. Yates passed from this life on Sunday, March 1st, 2020 at his residence while surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 25th, 1939 in Tullahoma, Tennessee to the late Harold Yates, Sr. and Ida Marie O’Kelley Yates. Mr. Yates was a member of First United Methodist Church in Winchester. Mr. Yates was a 1957 graduate of Tullahoma High School and later went on to study at Tennessee Tech University. He proudly served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. Mr. Yates retired in 1998 after 35 years of service from Arnold Air Force Base. He was one of the first 200 civilians to be hired at “ARO”, his employee number was 63. He earned his Aviation Certification from Winchester Aviation and enjoyed flying his own plane. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EEA) chapter #699, which he locally named as the “Thrashers”. In addition to being an avid aviator, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and listening to fifties music. He was a devoted and loyal attendee of the Tullahoma Class of 1957 reunions. In addition to his parents, Mr. Yates is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Judith Cochran Yates; sister, Betty Jean “BJ” Yates and two nephews, Edwin and Timothy Yates. He leaves to cherish his memory and mourn his passing, his daughter, Deborah (Jimi) Haynes of Winchester; son, Michael “Bubba” (Lavonne) Yates of Winchester; grandson, John Wolf of Winchester and granddaughter, Bailey Mae Yates of Winchester; brother, Harold (Janet) Yates, Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida; sister-in-law, Charlotte Goodman of St. Joseph, Missouri; devoted friend, Linda Cobb Holland of Chattanooga; grand puppies, Jenny “the beagle” and Layne Isabella Renesmee “the Boxer”. The family will receive friends at Watson-North Funeral Home on Saturday, March 14th, 2020 from 12 noon until 2 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.watsonnorth.com.
