Georgia May (Mason) Tate

January 23, 1926 ~ April 9, 2022 (age 96)


I heard the voice of Jesus say, come unto me and rest.  

Lie down thy weary one, lie down thy head upon my breast.


On Saturday, April 9, 2022 our loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister Georgia May Tate answered the call of our Heavenly Father and transitioned into internal rest.

Georgia May was born in Winchester, TN January 23, 1926, the daughter of Will and Georgia Mason.  In addition to her devoted parents, she is preceded in death by five brothers:  Roy Mason, James Mason, Davis Mason, Herman Mason Sr. and Willie D. Mason; as well as three sisters:  Louise Brannon, Katherine Upchruch and Anna B. Morrow.  She is also survived by two sisters Betty Carden and Sarah Vaughn.

Georgia May was a long-term resident of Sewanee, TN where she lived for over sixty years.  She united in holy wedlock to Frank Tate who preceded her in death.  This union was blessed with seven loving children.  Her memory will be forever cherished in death by three of her children the late Bobby Tate, Jimmy Tate and Dorothy Tate Turrentine.  She was survived by four children Charles(Stella) Brannon, James Tate, Annie Tate and Randy Tate.  She was also survived by her grandchildren:  Antonio Len Turrentine, Kimberly Turrentine, Jacqueline Denise Turrentine, Sonja Brannon, Daralle Brannon, Sylvia Brumback, Jerry Simmons, Chad Gray, Stephanie Fitzgerald and Shanika Bean.  She was also preceded in death by her grandson Bobby Tate Jr. In addition, she is survived by her sister-in-law Leatha Mason and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Georgia May accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior. 

Georgia May was a loving and devoted mother, daughter and sister.  She loved life, gardening, shopping for gifts and sharing time with her friends and family. She was always there to lend a hand, share advice, add encouraging words and share in a laugh to brighten someone’s day.  She was a special lady whose love, caring and generosity seemed to have no end.

Georgia May was employed by and retired from the University of the South after 49 years.
