Donnie Lee Gray entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, quietly and peacefully at his home on Old Cowan Road. He was born to the late Willard Lee and Gladys Ruth Taylor Gray in Franklin County, Tennessee. He was a 1968 graduate of Franklin County High School.
Donnie enlisted into the United States Army and served during the Vietnam Era Conflict. Upon completion of his military service, he spent the remainder of his professional career as a First Responder in Atlanta, Georgia, the city that became his new home. Donnie had a successful 20-year career as a police officer. After which, he worked as a fireman for the Atlanta Fire Department. He retired in 2008 and returned to his grassroots, Winchester and particularly the Old Cowan Road community.
Upon his return to Winchester, Donnie re-established his membership at Holy Covenant Original Church of God, the church he grew up in as a child. He sang in the Mass Choir as well as the Male Chorus.
Donnie was a loving father and grandfather. He was a neighbor and friend. He enjoyed life and brought life into every environment he entered. He leaves to cherish his memories a son Stacy Taylor; two daughters Tateasna Taylor (fiancé Orlando Elliott) and Galeah Lester; two stepdaughters Champain Lester and Teajia Stevens; four grandsons Grady Battles, Jordon Taylor, Tyler and Jamal Blackwell; and a lifelong friend Frances Taylor, all of Winchester, Tennessee. A host of cousins, relatives, and friends also remain.
The family will receive friends Sunday September 1, 2019 at the Original Church of God beginning at 12 noon. The funeral service will commence at 1 p.m. at the church with Pastor Rose Vanzant officiating. Interment will follow at Winchester City Cemetery with military honors.
