On December 18, 2017, Mildred Pauline Short Albert crossed over the river to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Millie, as she preferred to be called, led a long and full life.  She was born in Sewanee, Tennessee on July 18, 1923 to Ruben and Lena Short. She spent her early years in Sewanee living in the family’s log cabin home, nestled between the University of the South and Saint Mary’s Convent.  It was at the University Millie met her future husband, The Rev. William Albert.  Her life as a pastor’s wife took her from her beloved mountain home to Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Connecticut and Massachusetts.  She faced many of life’s challenges and struggles with dignity, grace, humor, wit and passion.

Years later Millie returned to Sewanee, renewed old friendships, made new friends, reaffirmed her family bonds and Southern roots.  She was especially proud of the fact that her ancestor William Short was Thomas Jefferson’s “adoptive son.” She enjoyed talking about her family’s important contributions in shaping this young nation almost as much as she enjoyed the activities of a small Southern town; everything from pot luck suppers at the Sewanee Senior Center to the Fourth of July Parade and fireworks at the Lake Cheston.  Her short stories about life on the mountain have been enjoyed by many friends and relatives near and far. It was during her years in Sewanee that Millie crafted more than several hundred crocheted rugs made out of colorful plastic bags.  Her rugs can be found in homes from New Hampshire to California.

Millie spent the past five years living with her daughter, Mary Caroline and son-in-law, James Kocinski in Nashua New Hampshire. In that time she became friends with many people in the area. She was especially fond of the congregation and Pastor Sally at the Nashua Presbyterian Church, a place where she felt welcomed and loved.

Millie was predeceased by Rev. Albert, her son, Roderick A. Albert, her sisters Louise, Eleanor, brothers Walter, Bill, Ruben and Ernest.  She leaves her daughter, Mary Caroline Kocinski and James, her son, William Albert Jr. and wife Angela of North Oxford, MA, and Donna J. Albert, widow of Roderick Albert, Jacksonville, NC. She also leaves her grandchildren Paula Beauregard,  Adrianne Dewland and husband Tim, Jessie Kocinski and husband Brandon Messier, Alicia Kocinski,  William Albert III, Amy Allison,  Katherine McCray, her great grandchildren Joshua and Julie Allison, Emilie Albert, Dylan McCray, and Andrew Viau, and Katherine and Clara Messier.

It is with a heavy heart that we say good bye to Millie and it is with certain belief that she enters into eternal peace she will be greeted by the Lord and her loved ones with “Hello Millie…welcome home.”

Watson-North Funeral Home, Winchester Tennessee is in charge of the final arrangements. Interment will be at the O’Dear Cemetery in Sewanee TN.

Obituary written with love by her devoted family.
