Watson-North Funeral Home is deeply honor to be of service and ministry to the family of Joan Carter. Mrs. Carter age 94, of Sewanee, passed from this life on November 16, 2017.

Joan Worstell Carter died peacefully at home in Sewanee, TN, on November 16, 2017 at the age of 94 attended by her two oldest children. Joan was born in New York City on June 30, 1923, the only child of Russell and Ida Worstell, but soon moved to Scarsdale, NY, where she attended and graduated from the local elementary and high schools. In 1945, she graduated from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA, where she met her fellow classmate John Paul ‘Jack’ Carter whom she married in 1947. His profession as an Episcopal minister took them consecutively to Kannapolis, NC, Austin, TX, The Plains, VA, Charlottesville, VA, and Ellicott City, MD. The couple retired to Sewanee, TN, in 1987, where her husband died in 1997 after over 50 years of marriage.

Joan was the mother of six children, Stephen Carter of Sewanee, TN, Christine Carter-Husk of Belmont, MA, Janet Posner of Charlottesville, VA, Andrew Carter of Hanford, CA, Virginia Carter of Towson, MD and Thomas Carter of Cary, NC. She is survived by all six children as well as eleven grandchildren.

She was a lover of arts and crafts from knitting and needlepoint to pottery and weaving, was an avid reader of mysteries, and was a very active researcher of her family’s genealogy. She loved to travel, having visited with her husband or children, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, much of the US, New Zealand and Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland and many other European countries. She was a quiet but generous person with a keen intellect and an inquisitive mind.

A memorial service for Joan will be held at a later date at Otey Parish in Sewanee, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church Parish Day School, 9130 Frederick Rd., Ellicott City, MD or to Otey Parish, P. O. Box 267, Sewanee, TN.
